Precious
Precious, based on the book Push by African American poet and activist Sapphire, was one of the most acclaimed films of 2009/2010.
It’s the story of a morbidly obese 16 year old African American girl who is pregnant with her second child. The pregnancies are the result of being raped by her father. She lives in Harlem with her physically and emotionally abusive mother.
A tragic story that is not without hope. Precious meets a new teacher, a lesbian called Blu Rain, and begins to learn how to read. She finally confronts her demons and there is a sense that the future is brighter for Precious.
I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
Polly Vandersma is an off beat and awkward character who lands herself a job in an art gallery. Here she meets the gallery curator, Gabrielle, who on the outset appears to be everything Polly longs to be – confident, sophisticated and beautiful.
Polly inevitably develops a crush on her boss and the fantasies ensue. However, Gabrielle is already involved with one of the young artists she represents, Mary.
Polly, a budding photographer, anonymously submits her work to the gallery and Gabrielle’s dismissal of the work causes Polly to retreat even further into her lonely existence. She also uncovers Gabrielle’s and Mary’s fraudulent secret.
All is not lost though, and eventually Polly’s value becomes apparent to all - especially Polly.
