Kate Smith

What’s your background as an artist?

I loved to draw as a child, but didn’t take up art seriously until I was in my twenties. But then I didn’t take anything seriously before then! I have always been quite laid back so it took a while for me to show how passionate about art I am. Now I’m in my final year at art school and spend nearly all my time making art.

What’s the attraction to drawing and what media do you use to produce your drawings?

I'm not sure why, but whenever I want to express myself I start by drawing. Drawing can be very emotional and expressive, or it can be quite reserved and analytical. It really suits whatever mood I’m in. I use any media I can lay my hands on - charcoal, pencil, paint, etching, screenprinting, ink - anything really.

Who and what inspires you?

My inspirations changed weekly. But at the moment I absolutely love the work of South African artist William Kentridge.  He manages to be very personal and political within the one artwork, and the work looks amazing too.

What do you like about incorporating text in your work?

I often include text in a work because it can add another layer of meaning. Text is wonderful if I want to make a direct statement.

Where can we see you work?

My work will be on show at the University of SA graduate show in December. Or if you can't wait until then email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
