The Jezabels - She’s So Hard EP
MGM
5 stars
A gentle piano lures you into this EP from Sydney Quartet The Jezabels, leading into some delicious chunky drums and some of the best indie rock vocals you’ll hear this year. Hayley Mary’s determined vocal weaving is reminiscent of Running Up That Hill, with an intriguing and very interesting shimmery sound.
Speech Debelle – Speech Therapy
Big Dada/Inertia
4.5 stars
Fabulous South London hip hop that doesn’t need to shout to catch your attention. Smart and sensual, Speech Therapy is heartfelt, delicate and carries the perfect balance of slick rhythms, subtle humour, soulful and intimate secrets almost whispered into your ears. A deserving winner of the UKs 2009 Mercury Prize.
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour – Fruit
Small Grant Records
4 stars
If you’ve had a craving for Danish electro-pop with soul, jazz and funk influences and a squeaky lady singer, this is the fruit salad for you. This album is so much fun it’s practically spilling glitter out of the speakers. Lars and Mette are a sensational duo exploring futuristic and retro sounds in a way that somehow makes perfect sense.
Kate Ceberano – Merry Christmas
Universal
3 stars
I had to include this syrupy sweet yuletide treat. Sure, it’s not Mariah singing 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', but Kate Ceberano sure knows how to delivery the Christmas cheer. Lots of light and shade – blissful family fun tunes as well as crying into your beer standards.
