LA Lesbian Bishop Ordained

The Los Angeles branch of the Anglican Church ordained an openly lesbian bishop May 15.

The event was witnessed by an estimated 3,000 in America’s more tolerant West Coast. The only disruption was by a man and a boy interrupting the beginning of the service by calling homosexuality a sin.

The appointment of Mary Douglas Glasspool to suffragan – or assistant – bishop will deepen the rift between liberal and conservatives in the world-wide group of Anglican national churches in which the Episcopal Church is the US member. The US Church appointed its first openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson, in 2003 and was urged not appoint further homosexuals to office.

Bishop Glasspool responded by offering to meet with her critics calling herself a “reconciling person”.
