The GLORIA’S

Nominations are now open for a new set of awards – The GLORIAs – designed to highlight gaffes made about the GLBTI community. Launched by NSW Labor MLC Penny Sharpe, it stands for ‘Gay and Lesbian Outrageous, Ridiculous and Ignorant comment Awards’.
“Every day there are public comments about people in the GLBTI community that are ignorant, unhelpful and sometimes dangerous,” Sharpe said. “The GLORIAs are a new event that will shine a light on these comments and provide a fun night to expose homophobia in our community.”
The GLORIAs are modelled on former NSW MP Meredith Burgmann’s Ernie awards for sexist comments.
“If you have ever yelled at the television, newspaper, radio or the computer when you have seen one of these comments – I urge you to nominate it for a GLORIA,” Sharpe said
“Tony Abbott’s recent forays into the threatening (or not) nature of homosexuals and Eddie Maguire’s handling of men’s ice skating are just a couple of the nominations we have already received.”
Nominations are open in seven categories: Media, Sport, Politics, Law, Religion, Online and the Silliest GLBTI comment made from within the GLBTI community. Online voting will open on April 27. Go to theglorias.com.au.
GLORIA Award winners will be announced at a dinner at NSW Parliament House on International Day Against Homophobia on Monday, May 17, by journalist David Marr. A “boo off” will decide the winner of the worst comment of the year, also known as the Golden GLORIA.
