Waiting for same-sex marriage
| 26 May 2010
A massive crowd turned out for the Equal Love same-sex marriage rally in Melbourne on May 15.
Most of the cast of Waiting for Godot, including the director, were on hand to support same-sex marriage and talked about their own same-sex relationships and issues of equality.
The crowd heard speeches from the cast, as well as from Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who received a petition of some 100,000 signatures from Sir Ian McKellen on behalf of Equal Love.
Also in attendance were Equal Love’s Ali Hogg, Joy 94.9 presenter Doug Pollard and Education Minister Bronwyn Pike, who spoke about how the meaning of words – including ‘marriage’ – often change over time, referring to the Australian definition of marriage as a heterosexual institution.
